"Italgrip was developed by a team of engineers’ who
wanted to achieve a roughening system for road surfaces with the
primary aim of obtaining the maximum friction at the tire and
road interface.
As a consequence of increasing the friction there has been a significant
reduction in accidents wherever ITALGRIP® has been used. In
addition, after more than thirteen years of service on high volume
roadways, the durability of the system has been established.
All these claims have been confirmed by the Autostrade authorities
through performance measurements on various installations of ITALGRIP®
since the first installation in 1989.
Based on this experience, and the favorable results obtained,
ITALGRIP, Srl. Made the decision to approach the American market,
where safety and service life are major issues.
Therefore, in 1998 ITALGRIP, Srl contacted the American Society
of Civil Engineers, Civil Engineering Research Foundation –Highway
Innovative Technology Evaluation Center (HITEC) in Washington,
D.C. to initiate their formal evaluation procedure. Then, in 1999
the first applications of ITALGRIP® were placed in the United
States under the auspices of the HITEC program.
In Wisconsin, where most of the ITALGRIP® was placed, friction
and accident data collected by the Wisconsin Department of Transportation
has substantiated the claims made by the Company; i.e., that ITALGRIP®
System can reduce the number of accidents on slippery roads by
more than 50%. In addition, after three winters, the System has
proven that it can standup under the harshest of conditions and,
thus,, can protect the underlying pavement, extending its life."
